Stranger in a Strange Land

Stranger in a Strange Land.

I remember there was one time were i felt really out of place and I just felt odd. It was last summer I was on the Costa Rica trip with Ty,Austin, Danny, Michael, and my self. We were in a small town on the coast. this town was filled with natives and very few tourists. However it seemed like the town was expecting tourist due to the surplus of little shops and street vendors. We made our way through the town and to my surprise everyone was extremely nice to us, they waved and seemed just very happy. we walked by a group of older men. they were playing dominoes and smoking cigars. we watched them play for a minute and were immediately invited to play a match with them. we told them that we couldn't and made our way. The real reason that we didn't want to play is because they were wagering money, plus we would get creamed.

we visited several shops and in each the owners were extremely kind and we basically had a short conversation with every shop owner. the best thing is when we bought something you could see how happy they were because they now have money to feed there families. we grew hungry so went to the local market, we bought some Costa Rican ice cream...which was amazing! we decided to sit on the curb and enjoy the local ice cream. Then out of no where we see these two ladies walking really close to each other (like uncomfortable close) we watched them. Out of no where they were screaming at each other and cursing in Spanish. one then grabbed the others long hair and slammed it into a car door. within the second a lot of people circled up and watched them fight, cell phones out filming the whole scene. they then tackled each other under a delivery truck and they were just beating each other. After what seemed like two minutes the police showed up. I noticed that the cops had to carry there own personal guns(i notice things like that, the cop on the left was caring what looked like an old colt six shooter, and the cop on the right had what looked like a normal glock nothing special) the cops dragged the women out from under the truck and cuffed then and then walked then away.

Instantly everyone went back to their normal lives. we visited a store and they seemed like nothing happened. What i took from that experience is that no matter where you are there are still people who have hate in them and people who are kind at heart.

  1. Definitely an engaging, entertaining narrative of your trip to Costa Rica, Mike. You really capture your voice-- a charming mixture of absolute sincerity and gentle sarcasm-- in this comical piece. My favorite part was your reaction to the dominoes players: "...plus, we would get creamed." The description of the two ladies fighting was also pretty colorful!

Just make sure to PROOF your writing next time; otherwise, nice job!

  2. Dot,
I really enjoyed the humorous description of Costa Rica. It allowed the reader to accept some of the more dark and powerful contexts ,like people being unable to provide for their families, and it mixes them with fun and humor. The story provides an exciting outlook onto a less fortunate society from the eyes of someone who is not used to such things. It's well written and the only thing I'd like to have seen would be a more fluent story from beginning to end.
